How To Wash Braids
1. Shampoo your scalp
- Wet you hair
- Depending on the condition of your scalp, decide whether to use one or two shampoos.
- If you haven’t washed your hair in a while and have a lot of product buildup or an oily scalp, start with a clarifying shampoo to create a clean base. Then, follow up with a moisturising shampoo to hydrate your hair.
- If a clarifying shampoo isn’t necessary, you can go straight to using a moisturising shampoo.
- Apply the shampoo to your scalp and gently massage with your fingertips to cleanse it.
- If the shampoo feels thick or difficult to spread, dilute it with water for easier application.
- Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear to ensure all the shampoo is washed out.
2. Condition your braids
- Apply conditioner to moisturise your hair.
- Use a lightweight conditioner so that it can be washed out easily. You can also dilute it with water first to easily rinse it out.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all the conditioner.
3. Dry your braids
- Wrap your braids in a microfibre towel to absorb excess water.
- Keep the towel on until your braids are dry, or use a hairdryer on the cool setting.
- Ensure your braids dry completely to avoid the risk of mould. Dampness can lead to mould growth, which is harmful to both your hair and your braids.
Braids Maintenance Tips
- Use a lightweight oil to moisturise your scalp if it feels dry or itchy.
- Wrap your braids in a silk scarf or bonnet before bed to minimise frizz. For more tips on sleeping comfortably with braids, check out our post on how to sleep with box braids.
