As a Black woman, have you ever avoided a workout to keep your hair looking good? If you've ever had to choose between keeping your edges laid and hitting the gym, you're definitely not alone. Maintaining natural hair while staying active can be challenging. Exercise offers tremendous mental and physical benefits, but many of us miss out due to concerns about hair care. Don’t worry, in this post we’ll share top tips for working out with Afro hair. Tips for Working Out With Afro Hair
Wrap your hair
- Wrap your hair in a satin or silk head wrap. This will protect your hair from sweat by keeping moisture at bay.
- Always ensure your hair is dry before unwrapping it. Use cool to medium heat to dry any moisture before removing the wrap.
Put your hair up
- Keep your hair off your skin or clothes to reduce contact with sweat.
- Try hairstyles such as a ponytail, bun or pineapple. You can also go for low-manipulation protective styles on your natural hair such as twists, braids and cornrows.
Cleanse Regularly
- Exercising generates a lot of sweat, which can dry out your hair. It’s essential to wash your hair regularly with shampoo, followed by conditioner. Washing once a week is recommended. Avoid over-washing, as this can strip your scalp of its natural oils.
Moisturise Regularly
- Moisture is key to maintaining healthy hair. Properly moisturised and hydrated hair helps prevent breakage, allowing you to retain length. Moisturise your hair using the LOC or LCO method before and after exercising, using products you know work best for your hair. If you're unsure about which method is best for you check out our post on the LOC vs LCO method.
