Dreadlocks are a beautiful way to embrace your natural hair, but like any hairstyle, they require proper care to stay strong, healthy, and looking their best. Depending on what stage your locs is at, you may need to incorporate retwisting locs into your routine. However, no matter where you are in your loc journey, the most important factor in maintaining their health is proper moisturisation.
In this post, we’ll discuss the best practices for maintaining your dreadlocks, from washing and moisturising to protecting them at night.
How to Maintain Your Dreadlocks for Strength & Longevity
Washing, moisturising, and consistency are key when it comes to caring for your locs.
Washing Your Locs
It is important to wash your locs to keep your scalp clean and remove build-up and excess oils. It is therefore important you choose your shampoo and conditioner carefully so it doesn't leave residue on your hair. It is also recommended to use a sulphate-free shampoo. When cleansing your hair, work the shampoo into you scalp and gently massage with your fingertips to remove dirt, build-up and any other impurities. After shampooing, follow up with a lightweight conditioner to moisturise your hair.
The frequency of washing depends on your lifestyle and loc stage. For example, if you exercise regularly, your locs may accumulate sweat and oil more quickly, requiring more frequent washes. However, be mindful not to over-wash, as this can dry out your scalp and cause itchiness and breakage.
Drying Your Locs
Thoroughly drying your locs is essential whenever they get wet. The best method is to use a microfibre towel to absorb excess water, then allow them to air dry. Direct heat can damage your locs, so air drying is recommended. However, if you need to speed up the process, use a blow dryer on a low heat setting.
Always ensure your locs are completely dry before covering or styling them to prevent mould and unpleasant odours.
Moisturising Your Locs
As we mentioned earlier, keeping your locs moisturised is the best way to ensure they remain strong and healthy. Dry hair becomes brittle and prone to breakage meaning your locs could snap off. To keep them hydrated use a lightweight leave-in conditioner and lightweight oil. You can also deep condition every 1-2 weeks, but this is not recommended if your still at the starting stage. If in doubt ask your loctician if it is safe to do so at the stage your at.
Protecting Your Locs At Night
Before bed, wrap your locs in a silk or satin scarf or wear a silk or satin bonnet. For added protection, consider using silk or satin pillowcases in case your scarf or bonnet comes off during the night. Avoid materials such as cotton, as they can cause friction, leading to moisture loss and breakage. Silk and satin help retain moisture and prevent frizz and tangles, keeping your locs looking their best.
