Are you wondering 'How do I maintain faux locs?'. Faux locs are a fantastic protective style, but they must be properly maintained to keep them looking good and to help your natural hair remain healthy. Maintenance is important for ensuring your style lasts and your hair stays in the best condition. If you’re not sure how to do this, don’t worry, we’ll go through some easy tips in this post.

5 Easy Tips To Maintain Faux Locs

1. Wash your scalp and locs

Even though you may not need to wash your locs as frequently, you do need to wash your scalp. A healthy scalp is key to healthy hair, which means removing excess oils, sweat, dirt, and product build-up. Wash your scalp and locs as often as needed. For a step-by-step guide, check out our post on how to wash faux locs.

2. Moisturise your scalp

Hydration is essential for maintaining a healthy scalp. Use a lightweight oil or a hydrating scalp spray to keep your scalp moisturised, prevent dryness and itching, and promote healthy hair growth. Avoid using heavy products, as they can cause build-up and weigh down your locs.

3. Moisturise your strands

Dry hair can lead to breakage, so it’s important that your natural hair protected within the faux locs remains moisturised. Apply a leave-in conditioner or a hydrating mist to your strands. Again, steer clear of heavy creams or oils, as they can make your locs feel heavy.

4. Protect your locs before bed

One of the easiest ways your locs can become frizzy and tangled is while you sleep, so protecting them at night is a must. Wrap your hair in a silk scarf or wear a silk bonnet to reduce moisture loss, frizz, and tangling. Cotton fabrics can draw moisture from your hair and cause friction, so you might also want to swap your cotton pillowcases for silk ones for extra protection.

5. Remove your locs when it's time

Proper maintenance can help your faux locs last longer, but for the health of your natural hair, it’s best to remove them after around 4–6 weeks. You can easily do this at home by following our guide on how to remove faux locs easily. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to leave it to the professionals, you can find protective style removal services here.
