How To Keep Your Scalp Clean With Braids

Braids are a go-to protective style for many and for good reason. They’re beautiful, low maintenance, and a great style for any occasion. But let’s be honest, keeping your scalp clean with braids can sometimes feel like a mission. Still, it’s essential. Between product build-up, sweat, and everyday dirt, things can get uncomfortable quickly if your scalp isn't getting the care it needs.

Why A Clean Scalp Matters

A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair growth. When your scalp is clogged with build-up or left dry and flaky, it can lead to itchiness, irritation and even hair loss over time. Just because your hair is tucked away in a protective style doesn’t mean your scalp should be neglected.

Tips On How To Keep Your Scalp Clean With Braids

Tip 1: Cleanse regularly

Washing your hair is a must even though your natural hair is tucked away. Here's how to do it:

  1. Dilute shampoo with water in a nozzle bottle. The nozzle bottle allows you to distribute the product evenly in hard to reach areas.
  2. Massage it into your scalp, gently with your fingertips.
  3. Rinse the shampoo out.
  4. Apply a conditioner to moisturise your hair.
  5. Rinse the conditioner out.
  6. Dry your braids with a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel.

Pro tip: If your braids look frizzy after washing, apply some mousse to smooth things out, lightly oil your braids, and tie them down with a satin scarf until dry.

Tip 2: Listen To Your Hair

While it’s recommended to wash your braids every two weeks, the ideal frequency depends on your lifestyle and scalp needs. If your scalp gets oily quickly, or you exercise often and sweat more, you may need to wash more regularly. On the flip side, if your scalp stays dry and clean longer, you might go a bit further between washes.

Bottom line: Don’t just follow what others are doing. Pay attention to what your scalp is telling you.

Tip 3: Use The Right Products

The products you use make a big difference. To avoid build-up:

  • Steer clear of heavy oils, butters or styling creams directly on the scalp.
  • Choose a clarifying shampoo if your scalp has a lot of build-up.
  • Use a moisturising or hydrating shampoo for regular maintenance if your scalp just needs a gentle refresh.

Tip 4: Keep Your Scalp Moisturised

Clean doesn’t mean dry. Make sure you’re moisturising your scalp regularly to keep it hydrated and balanced. Dry scalps can become itchy, tight and prone to flaking which is just as bad as an too oily scalp. Apply lightweight oils such as jojoba or grapeseed oil into your scalp directly and massage gently to stimulate blood flow.

Tip 5: Refresh In Between Wash Days

On days when you’re not washing, try these quick refresh methods:

  • Dry shampoo can absorb excess oil and leave your scalp feeling fresh.
  • An apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse is great for restoring your scalp's natural pH and removing light build-up. Mix one part ACV with two parts water in a spray bottle, apply to your scalp.

Keeping your scalp clean with braids doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s all about consistency, the right products and paying attention to your scalp’s needs. A healthy scalp means your hair can grow and thrive, even when it’s out of sight.
