If you’re new to locs or have been on your loc journey for some time, it’s important to know that proper maintenance and care are essential. Re-twisting your locs is a key part of keeping them healthy and well-maintained. To learn more about the stage of your loc journey, check out our post on the different stages of dreadlocks. You can re-twist your locs by visiting a loctician or you can do it yourself. While this may feel overwhelming at first, don’t worry! In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of re-twisting your locs.
How To Re-twist Locs
Preparation:
Step 1: Shampoo your hair
Start with freshly washed hair. It’s important to remove any dirt, oil, or product build-up from your scalp and locs before re-twisting.
Step 2: Condition and oil your hair
After shampooing, condition your hair to lock in moisture and keep it hydrated. Use a light oil to seal in the moisture and prepare your hair for re-twisting.
Re-twisting:
What you'll need?
- Twisting gel or cream
- Rat tail comb
- Blow dryer or hooded dryer
- Clips
Step 1: Redefine the parting
Take your first loc and use a rat-tail comb to carefully separate the new growth from the rest of the loc. This will help redefine the parting and create a neat look.
Step 2: Apply twisting gel or cream
Apply a generous amount of twisting gel or cream to the roots of your loc. This will help hold the re-twist in place.
Step 3: Re-twist the loc
Hold the base of your loc gently and use your palms to twist it in a clockwise direction. Continue twisting until the new growth is secure, then use a clip to hold the loc in place.
Step 4: Repeat for the rest of your hair
Work through your locs one by one, repeating the same process for each.
Step 5: Dry your locs
Once all your locs are re-twisted and clipped, dry them thoroughly using a blow dryer or hooded dryer on a low heat setting. Ensuring your locs are completely dry will help prevent odours.
Step 6: Remove the clips
After your hair is dry, carefully remove all the clips, and you’re done!
