How To Sleep With Box Braids Comfortably

Wrap your hair before bed

A vital step in caring for your braids at night is to wrap them with a silk or satin bonnet or head wrap before bed. This helps prevent frizz and increases the longevity of your braids. When wrapping your hair, ensure not to wrap too tightly as this can cause headaches and neck pain.

How to wrap braids in a silk bonnet:

  1. Split your hair into two sections.
  2. Crisscross the two sections at the back of your head.
  3. Bring the two ends up to the front of your head.
  4. Place the bonnet on while holding your hair in place.

How to wrap braids in a silk head wrap:

  1. Gather your hair at the top of your head and create a loose bun. Use a large hair band to secure the bun if necessary.
  2. Place the head wrap over your bun with the two ends hanging on either side of your face.
  3. Crisscross the ends at the front of the bun, then take the ends to the back, crisscross them again, and bring them to the front.
  4. Tie the ends together and tuck in any excess fabric.

Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Sleeping on silk or satin pillowcases provides extra protection. These materials reduce friction against your hair and are much gentler compared to rougher fabrics like cotton. Additionally, cotton can absorb moisture from your hair, leaving it dry and more prone to breakage.

Moisturise your braids before bed

Keeping your braids hydrated overnight is crucial. Moisturise your braids and scalp before bed using leave-in conditioner followed by oil on your ends, and apply a lightweight oil to your scalp. If your braids feel dry in the morning, rejuvenate them with some water and conditioner.
