Afro Hair Care Tips for Summer

Cleanse Your Scalp

In the summer heat, there is more humidity and sweat, which can cause build-up. It is essential to keep your scalp healthy and clean by cleansing regularly. Use a sulphate-free clarifying shampoo that is gentle and safe for frequent use. Follow up with a conditioner to lock in moisture and help avoid dry hair.

Moisturise Your Hair

Hot weather can cause dry hair, so it is key to moisturise your hair using the method that works best for you. Use either the LOC method or LCO method to moisturise your hair using products you know work well for you. If you are unsure about which technique is right for you check out our post on the LOC Vs LCO method: what’s the difference and which is right for you.

Minimise Sun Exposure

Just like how UV rays can cause skin damage, they can cause damage to our hair too. Therefore, it is best to protect your hair from direct sunlight by wearing a hat or head scarf.

Avoid Heat Styling

Summer weather makes our hair drier. Heat damage can make your hair look and feel brittle, dry, and damaged. Using heat tools such as blow dryers, straighteners, etc., would just add to the dryness from the sun. You can easily dry your hair without heat by using a microfibre towel or a cotton T-shirt.

How To Dry Afro Hair With a Micro Fibre Towel

Wrap your hair in the microfibre towel and squeeze the moisture out. Never rub your hair whilst drying as this can cause friction and weaken your hair, as well as raise the hair cuticle, which can cause frizz. Many microfibre towels come in a turban style which easily allows your hair to dry whilst you get ready.

How To Dry Afro Hair With a Cotton T-shirt

  1. Put your head through the opening of the T-shirt
  2. Cover your hair with the opening bottom of your T-shirt
  3. Twist the rest of the T-shirt
  4. Tuck the end of the twist at the back of your hair

Remember not to twist your hair. You should only twist the t-shirt with your hair remaining wrapped at the back.
