How do I keep goddess braids from tangling?

I love goddess braids, but the loose curly pieces always seem to tangle and matt after a while. I try to be gentle, but it still happens. How can I keep the curls from tangling and keep the style looking fresh?

I try not to over-manipulate the curls. These are some of the things I do:
Use a light mousse and gently finger-detangle the curls.
Wrap my braids in a satin bonnet or scarf at night to reduce friction.

Also using human hair for the curls can help reduce tangling as they don't tangle as easily as synthetic hair, but this might be a bit more expensive.
