I am unsure if weaves have the potential to break my hair since people don’t wear it as often anymore.

Most people who experience breakage from weave experience it because of the installation process where the hair is braided too tightly and installed too tightly. Additionally, if the take-down process is a rough and rushed one, you also have the potential to break your hair. So try and make sure you go to a qualified and professional hairdresser to avoid this. Also, (as with any hairstyle) do not leave it in for too long.
