If you’ve heard of a twist out before, you’ll know they can look absolutely stunning and are easy to achieve. Twist outs are a brilliant hairstyle for both long-time naturals and beginners on their natural hair journey. But what is a twist out, and why is it so popular? In this post, we’ll dive into what a twist out is, as well as its benefits and how you can maintain it.

What is a Twist Out?

A twist out is a natural hairstyle where twists are taken down to reveal soft, beautifully defined curls or waves. It’s typically created using two-strand twists that are unravelled once dry.

This style is loved for its versatility. Whether you’re working with a teeny afro or shoulder-length coils, a twist out can enhance your curl pattern and give your hair extra volume and bounce. You can do a twist out on freshly washed hair, stretched hair, or even to refresh an old style.

There are different types of twists you can use depending on the look you want to achieve:

  • Two-strand twists (the classic go-to)
  • Flat twists (great for definition close to the scalp)
  • Twist and curl (twisting with perm rods or rollers on the ends for extra shape)
  • Bantu knot twists (for a tighter, coiled look)

Whatever method you choose, the key is in the prep and the takedown.

How To Do a Twist Out on Natural Hair

Are you ready to achieve a twist out yourself? Here’s a step-by-step guide to doing a twist out on natural hair:

  1. Start with clean, detangled hair
Twist outs work best on freshly washed, conditioned, and detangled hair. Use a moisturising shampoo and deep conditioner to ensure your hair is hydrated. Hydration is key to ensuring your hair is soft and manageable. Whilst you're conditioning, detangle your hair gently with your fingers or a wide tooth comb.Ā
  2. Protect and moisturise
Before starting the style, you must protect your hair with moisture. Use the LOC or LCO method (liquid, oil, cream or liquid, cream, oil) to lock in moisture.
  3. Section your hair
Divide your hair into small to medium sections. The smaller the twists, the more defined your final style will be.
  4. Twist each section
Apply a twist-defining cream, gel, or butter depending on your hair type and the hold you prefer. Use two strands and twist tightly from root to tip. Make sure the ends are sealed, either by twirling them around your finger or using a roller for extra curl.
  5. Dry thoroughly
Let your twists air dry or use a hooded dryer. The most important part is to make sure your hair is 100% dry before taking down the twists. This helps prevent frizz and gives you the best definition.
  6. Take down
Apply a few drops of oil on your fingertips and gently unravel each twist with care. Take your time and take them down patiently to avoid breakage. If you want to add some volume to your roots you can fluff them up using an Afro pick.

Pros of Twist Outs

  • Easy to do at home
  • Promotes healthy hair and growth
  • Hair looks fuller
  • A versatile hairstyle

Cons of Twist Outs

  • High maintenance
  • Doesn’t work as well on fine hair
  • Can become frizzy if not unravelled properly
  • Can lose the curls overnight

How To Maintain Twist Outs

To make your twist out last, nighttime care is essential. Here’s how to preserve those curls:

  • Gather your hair - Before going to bed, loosely tie your hair in a pineapple or divide it into sections.
  • Use a silk scarf or bonnet and pillowcase - Protect your hair overnight by wrapping your hair in a silk scarf or bonnet. Cotton can suck the moisture from your hair and cause breakage and frizz. Using a silk pillowcase provides extra protection.

Whether you're new to embracing your natural hair or you've been rocking your curls for a while now, twist outs offer a simple way to change up your look while showing off your coils. With the right technique and a little patience, you’ll be rocking soft, defined twists out on natural hair like a pro.
